House Republicans have reportedly cooled on their push for impeachment against President Joe Biden after a closed-door meeting this week – due to his declining popularity.
This sentiment was expressed by none other than the newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) during a meeting on Capitol Hill.
At the meeting, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Oregon) stated that it is important to consider practicality if the GOP is to pursue impeaching Biden.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska), who is known for his moderate views, claimed that Johnson’s stance on impeachment is not driven by politics. Bacon reiterated the speaker’s statement, saying the GOP would follow the evidence wherever it leads. He does not think there is enough evidence to support a strong case for high crimes and misdemeanors, and he felt that Johnson shared this sentiment.

After becoming the speaker, Johnson emphasized caution and referred to impeachment as the most significant power available to Congress, claiming that he had not prejudged the matter.
“I do believe that very soon we are coming to a point of decision on it. I have been very consistent, intellectually consistent in this, and persistent that we have to follow due process, and we have to follow the law,” he told reporters earlier this month.
