House GOP Looking At Voting To Expunge Trump’s Two Impeachments

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) said he is considering a vote on expunging former President Donald Trump’s two impeachments. In a press conference on Thursday, McCarthy said he has looked into removing both impeachments.

The House and Senate would have to vote together to fully expunge the impeachments. With a Democrat majority in the Senate, it is extremely unlikely such a vote would pass. The measure to expunge Trump’s record showcases the political divide in both chambers.

“When you watch what he went through, I would understand why members would want to bring that forward,” McCarthy said. “Our first priority is to get our economy back on track, secure our borders, make our streets safe again, give parents the opportunity to have a say in their education, and actually hold government accountable. But I understand why individuals want to do it, and we’d look at it.”

McCarthy has been under pressure from right-wing members of his party to look into erasing the impeachments. Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma) offered a resolution to expunge Trump’s impeachment after the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Mullin’s resolution was backed by Rep.Elise Stefanik (R-New York), the fourth-ranked Republican in Congress. More than 30 Republicans backed the measure.

Mullin called the January 6 impeachment of Trump, “an unimaginable abuse of our Constitution.”

A smaller group of Republicans, led again by Mullin, put forward a resolution to expunge Trump’s Ukraine impeachment as well. The former President was first impeached after allegedly threatening to withhold military aid unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky investigated Hunter Biden.

Trump was acquitted of both impeachments after the Senate failed to meet the two-thirds majority to convict.
