Graphic videos were released and circulated around social media last week of Russian soldiers appearing to castrate a Ukrainian prisoner.
There is little known about the date of the videos or where they were taken from, and their authenticity has not been verified by any major media publications.
Over the span of three videos, a group of Russian soldiers throw a man, identified by Ukraine’s blue and yellow patches, to the ground. His hands are bound and he is helpless as a group of soldiers gather around to abuse him. One Russian soldier castrates him before shooting him and dragging him off to a ditch.
As the videos started to receive attention, increased accusations against Russia of committing war crimes gained traction. Ukraine announced that they had launched an investigation into the matter.

“Based on the results of the video processing, which shows how persons in the uniform of servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are torturing a prisoner in the uniform of a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Measures are being taken to establish all the circumstances of the crime,” Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s office said in a statement.
The United Nations has also condemned the actions in the video, saying, “All parties must refrain from torture, killings and threats of giving no quarter to captured combatants. They must promptly and effectively investigate all allegations of torture and unlawful killings.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s adviser Mykhailo Podolyak added to the conversation as he heavily accused Russia of war crimes.
“All the world needs to understand: Russia is a country of cannibals who enjoy torture and murder,” he wrote. “But the fog of war will not help to avoid the punishment of the executioners. We identify everyone. We will get everyone.”
The graphic video has been taken down from most social media sites.
