Herschel Walker Criticizes Biden’s Climate Law: ‘Don’t We Have Enough Trees?’

Herschel Walker, who’s running for the U.S. Senate, in Georgia, blasted President Joe Biden‘s signature $740 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which designates a portion of funds for planting trees.

“[A] lot of money it’s going to trees,” Walker said at an event near Atlanta. “Don’t we have enough trees around here?”

Supporters of the provision say that planting trees in urban areas can improve the climate and will positively impact health.

The ex-NFL player stood behind his statement in a Monday tweet.

“Yes, you heard me right,” Walker wrote on Twitter. “Joe Biden and @ReverendWarnock are spending $1.5 billion on ‘urban forestry’ and raising taxes on those making under $200k to pay for it. Yes, I have a problem with that.”

Though the Inflation Reduction Act will provide $1.5 billion to the U.S. Forest Service to plant more trees in cities, the White House says that taxes will not be raised on anyone making less than $400,000 per year.

Republicans, however, have voiced displeasure over the use of federal funds, and other critics have noted that even though Biden’s domestic agenda won’t directly raise taxes for most, there could still be trickle-down effects.
