Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic National Committee announced that they will give nearly $25 million to help support Democratic campaigns down the ballot.

Harris and the DNC have announced they will give $10 million each to committees supporting Democratic candidates in the Senate and House, $1 million each to groups that support Democratic gubernatorial and attorney general candidates and $2.5 million to a national Democratic group backing candidates for state legislatures. This contribution is larger than the contributions by Democratic nominees and the DNC in previous election years.

The contribution from Harris and the DNC points to the party’s success in fundraising since Harris entered the race in July. After Harris entered the race, grassroots and big-dollar donors increased their donations. In August alone, Harris raised $361 million, 50% more than opponent Donald Trump fundraised that month.

The money transfer may also demonstrate Harris’ and the DNC’s recognition of the importance of elections down the ballot.

“The vice president believes that this race is about mobilizing the entire country, in races at every level, to fight for our freedoms and economic opportunity,” said Jen O’Malley Dillon, chair of the Harris campaign. “That’s why the Vice President has decided to invest a historic sum into electing Democrats up and down the ballot.”

The contribution may also illustrate the Harris campaign’s understanding that if she takes office, Democrats must keep the Senate and flip the House back to a Democratic majority to accomplish many of her policy goals.

The allocated funds will “help Senate Democrats reach more voters, increase the strength of our campaigns, and ensure Democrats protect our Senate majority,” Sen. Gary Peters (D-Michigan), chair of the DSCC, said in a statement.
