A recent poll conducted by Reuters-Ipsos found that an upwards of 50% of Republicans believe former President Donald Trump to be America’s “true president.” Trump lost the presidential election to now-President Joe Biden by over seven million votes in what experts call the most-secure election in U.S. history. Republicans blame the loss on a number of factors consistent with the misinformation propagated by Trump.
The poll was conducted May 17 to 19 and included a little over 2,000 American adults, 909 of which identified as Democrats and 754 as Republicans. The poll complemented a similar poll taken in November, and the results have not changed much. 56% of Republicans maintain the belief that the 2020 election was corrupted by illegal voting (compared to the 59% that held this belief in November) and 61% believe the election as a whole was “stolen.”
The poll shows the power Trump retains over a large portion of the nation. Not only has he been able to get the GOP-controlled states to push for a review of the 2020 presidential election, but he has continued to influence Republican lawmakers into blocking an independent commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol riot.
