Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Michigan) said she is “disappointed” that President Donald Trump is looking into pardoning the men who conspired to kidnap her in 2020.
At an Oval Office event on Wednesday, Trump said the trial looked “like somewhat of a railroad job” and he would “take a look at” pardoning the convicted men.
The convicted conspirators, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr., were sentenced on federal charges in 2022 for their roles in plotting to kidnap Whitmer. Numerous others were also charged in either state or federal courts for their connections to the planned kidnapping.
Fox is currently serving a 16-year sentence while Croft is serving a 19.5-year sentence.

On Thursday, Whitmer reacted to Trump’s comments, saying that she was “very disappointed that they are even considering it, frankly.”
“I’ll be making my thoughts known to the White House, and I hope they take it into consideration,” added Whitmer.
This week, Trump has issued a number of pardons for individuals convicted of federal crimes. Throughout his second term, the president has frequently used his pardoning power to give clemency to those he believed were unjustly targeted for supporting him.
Her fellow Democrats have recently scrutinized Whitmer for maintaining a seemingly close relationship with President Trump.
In April, Whitmer was seen in the Oval Office as Trump signed a series of executive orders. Shortly after, Whitmer’s office made a statement claiming that her “presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event.”
Whitmer has defended her efforts to work with anyone, regardless of their party affiliation.
Speaking on political violence, Whitmer emphasized the need for both parties to reject any form of violence.
“We have to condemn political violence, no matter where it comes from, no matter who it’s aimed at,” said Whitmer prior to the Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan on Wednesday. “It does a disservice to everyone if we do anything short of that.”
Trump has not yet made an official decision regarding the federal sentences for Fox and Croft.
