Texas Rep. Troy Nehls (R) criticized Paul Ryan after the former speaker of the House announced he would not vote for former President Donald Trump in November.
Ryan stated that Trump was “unfit for office” and declared that he would not vote for Trump in the upcoming election during an interview with Fox News host Neil Cavuto on Tuesday.
Additionally, Ryan said that despite voting for Trump in 2016, he thinks that Trump has put himself above the Constitution and will no longer support him.
“I voted for him in 2016, hoping that there was going to be a different kind of person in office, and I do think character is a really important issue. If you put yourself above the Constitution, as he has done, that means you’re unfit for office,” Ryan said to Cavuto.

Nehls, a loyal Trump supporter who wore the former president’s mugshot on a T-shirt during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, called Ryan “a piece of garbage” on Wednesday, following Ryan’s controversial remarks. He further stated that men like Ryan were the problem with the Republican party.
When asked if Ryan made the decision not to vote for Trump because of the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Ryan said that it was one factor, but other factors contributed to his decision. He added that Trump’s character made him unfit for the office. Ryan also said he would not vote for Biden.
Trump has criticized Ryan recently, after a social media post last month where Trump called Ryan a RINO, meaning Republican in Name Only. Ryan responded to this claim and stated that RINO now refers to anyone who is not loyal to Trump, then calling him a populist rather than a conservative.
