Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) caught flack for comparing the people of Ukraine who are dealing with a violent Russian invasion to two other countries whose citizens, she says, need saving: Canada and the United States.
“I pray for Ukraine, and I wish them the best,” she said in an interview with Fox Nation on Sunday. “But we also have neighbors to the north who need freedom and need to be liberated, and we need that right here at home, as well.”
Boebert was referring to the trucker convoys and their protesting of the vaccination requirement to cross back and forth between Canada and the United States. The protest eventually shifted to a protest against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The trucker protests are expected to reach Washington D.C. next week.
Anthony Housefather, who is a member of the liberal wing of the Canadian parliament responded to Boebert’s comments in a tweet.

“While it’s good that you are not following the Trump line and are standing with Ukraine instead of Putin, it is sad to hear you compare free and democratic Canada to the invasion of Ukraine,” Housefather wrote.
Former U.S. ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman condemned Boebert’s comments as “reckless, dangerous and [crossed] every line of diplomacy and decency.” He added that Boebert’s style of politics would not have been permitted before ex-President Donald Trump.
Boebert, who was elected in 2020, has already announced her plans to run for reelection.
