Rep. Fred Upton (R-Michigan) announced his retirement from Congress this Tuesday. Upton was among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. He is the fifth Republican who voted for impeachment to announce his retirement after relentless attacks by the former president.
“Even the best stories has a last chapter. This is it for me,” Upton said during his retirement speech on the House floor. During his speech, Upton retold his greatest accomplishment, working on the 21st Century Cures Act, which laid the foundation for faster drug approval and product development.
In addition to the Cures Act being signed into law, Upton also mentioned some of his highlights which were changing corporate tax laws, ensuring pipeline safety and voting to cap the price of insulin, which is a Democratic bill.
