Conservative activist Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, told the January 6 Committee she didn’t discuss her efforts to overturn the 2020 election with her husband.
In 2020, Virginia, who goes by Ginni, pressed then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows— President Donald Trump‘s top aide — to pursue challenges to the election, according to text messages revealed in March.
During a closed-door interview with the January 6 Committee on Thursday, she repeated the false claims that the election was stolen from Trump. She said, however, she didn’t discuss the matter with Justice Thomas.
“I know he was completely unaware of my texts with Mark Meadows until this committee leaked them to the press while he was in a hospital bed fighting an infection,” Thomas said in her statement.

Ginni Thomas met with the committee for four hours. According to Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), the chair of the commission, she answered “some questions.”
“It’s a work in progress,” he told reporters. “At this point, we’re glad she came.”
The Jan. 6 committee was expected to hold a hearing this week but postponed it due to Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Florida on Wednesday, the day the meeting was previously scheduled. A new date has not yet been set.
Mark Paoletta, Ginni Thomas’s lawyer, said in a statement that she was “happy to cooperate with the committee.”
“As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas had significant concerns about fraud and irregularities in the 2020 election. And, as she told the Committee, her minimal and mainstream activity focused on ensuring that reports of fraud and irregularities were investigated,” he said. “Beyond that, she played no role in any events after the 2020 election results. As she wrote in a text to Meadows at the time, she also condemned the violence on January 6, as she abhors violence on any side of the aisle.”
