Georgia Republicans Pounce On Stacey Abrams For Attending Event Unmasked

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams came under fire this week for posing maskless in a photo with a group of young school children.

She was participating in a reading event to celebrate Black History month at Glenwood Elementary in Decatur, Georgia where the school district is under indoor masking requirements through February 22.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) and former Sen. David Perdue (R-Georgia) who is running to unseat Kemp criticized the move.

“Where is Stacey’s mask? We all know Stacey Abrams’ hypocrisy knows no bounds,” a statement from Perdue statement said. “Liberals’ thirst for power during this pandemic has caused enormous damage to our kids, while the elite like Stacey continue living their lives. What is even worse is that this is a classroom in Brian Kemp’s Georgia, not New York or California.”

Abrams responded accusing her political opponent of undermining what the day was truly about.

“It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack, and it is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records when it comes to protecting the public health during the pandemic,” Abrams said in a statement posted to social media.

Her team released another statement later on elaborating on why Abrams was not wearing a mask.

“Stacey trusts science and supports masking in schools as it’s the current CDC recommendation,” Abrams’ campaign managers Lauren Groh-Wargo wrote in a tweet. “She wore a mask to the event, and removed it at the podium so she could be heard by students watching remotely and for photos, but only with folks who were masked.”
