Georgia GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson Will Resign, Raising Democrats’ Hopes Of Flipping The Senate

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Georgia) announced that he will be resigning at the end of December.

The long-time senator said that growing health issues from Parkinson’s Disease, in addition to having a growth removed from his kidney last week, led him to make his decision. In July, the 74-year-old senator broke multiple ribs and tore his rotator cuff after falling in his apartment.

In his statement, he said that in his 40 years of being an elected official, he has always put his constituents before anything else, but “with the mounting health challenges I am facing, I have concluded that I will not be able to do the job over the long term in the manner the citizens of Georgia deserve.”

Georgie Democrats are looking to take the two Senate seats now up in 2020. “We are the battleground state, and Georgia Democrats are ready to fight and deliver both the Senate and the presidency for Democrats across the country in 2020,” the Democratic party of Georgia said in a statement. Gov. Brian Kemp (R-Georgia) has not decided who he will appoint to the seat.

Sen. David Perdue (R-Georgia) is also up for reelection. Democrats vying for the seat must decide whether to run against Perdue or a new appointee to the second seat.
