Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is investigating former President Donald Trump and his allies for possible criminal activity, challenged statements made by Trump lawyers by saying she doesn’t think presidential immunity will protect Trump from her investigation.
Willis’ case is centered around a January 2, 2021 phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which Trump prodded Raffensperger to “find the votes” to overturn the election. Trump maintains that he didn’t say anything wrong in the call, and called Willis’ probe a “political witchhunt.” Willis is trying to find out if there was any interference by Trump or his team related to voter fraud in Georgia during the 2020 election.
“This is a criminal investigation. We’re not here playing a game,” Willis said in response to the possibility of Trump’s team using presidential immunity to delay the investigation. “I plan to use the power of the law. We are all citizens.”
Willis was granted a special grand jury last month that will be able to subpoena witnesses and focus solely on gathering and analyzing evidence from this case. She said she plans to begin issuing subpoenas in May, but most of them will come closer to June and the later summer months. This will aid Willis immensely in the investigation. She previously stated that witnesses had refused to participate in the investigation without a subpoena.

“When I sit down, I will have done everything that I know how to do to bring a fair and true picture. And so they’re welcome to their opinions,” Willis later added, speaking of her critics who argue she should speed up or narrow her probe. “But while I sit here as the elected DA, we’re going to do things so that the American public can be confident we did everything we knew how to do to bring justice.”
