George W. Bush Donates Cash To Anti-Trump Republicans

Former President George W. Bush maxed out his personal contributions in support of  Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (R) and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski(R).

Both of them voted to impeach former President Donald Trump over his handling and possible incitement of last January’s Capitol attack. They will both face Trump-endorsed challengers in the primaries.

Bush contributed $5,800 to Cheney on October 28, 2021, according to disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission. The former president also donated to Cheney in 2016, records show. She is currently the lead Republican on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Cheney’s seat has attracted multiple challengers, but Trump endorsed Harriet Hageman. Hageman is around $453,000 behind Cheney in fundraising.

Bush gave Murkowski $2,900 on December 31, 2021 for her primary. Trump endorsed Kelly Tshibaka for Senate in Alaska. She has joined Trump in calling for the removal of Senate Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky).

Both contributions were the maximum donation allowed and the Alaska and Wyoming primaries will take place on August 16.

Bush has previously shown his support for Cheney who is also the daughter of Dick Cheney, Bush’s Vice President for both of his terms. He held a fundraiser for her in his home state of Texas last fall.

Bush has repeatedly denounced the Capitol rioters, even comparing them to the 9/11 terrorists.

“There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home,” Bush said during a speech in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. “But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit. And it is our continuing duty to confront them.”
