France Seizes Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich $120 Million French Riviera Mansion

French authorities have seized Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich‘s $120 million French Riviera mansion.

It was the last of his 12 properties to be seized, and one of his favorite locations. Abramovich bought Château de la Croë in 2001 and spent around $40 million on renovation costs. The mansion boasts 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms. It sits on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Famed past residents include King Edward VIII and World War II-era British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

France and a number of other European countries have been ramping up sanctions on Russia and its prominent citizens, especially those who are close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, to put pressure on the Kremlin to pull out of Ukraine. Many of Abramovich’s assets have been frozen in the U.S. and the U.K.

Over the weekend, Abramovich traveled to Kyiv in an effort to prompt peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He has been serving as a mediator between the two countries and has been present at multiple peace negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even requested that President Joe Biden avoid sanctioning Abramovich. He was reportedly the victim of a poisoning at previous Kyiv talks.
