Before Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) stepped into the political ring, she made her money in TV as a local news anchor.
One of Lake’s former colleagues at the station, Stephanie Angelo, claimed this week that the Lake she knew never would’ve run the far-right, former President Donald Trump-backed campaign that she is now running, saying that when she knew her, she was “liberal to her core.”
Angelo added that when they worked together, Lake was pro-choice.
“Her saying that abortion should be illegal — absolutely not,” Angelo told DNYUZ. “The Kari I knew would never have said that, and she wouldn’t have believed it either.”

Other former colleagues from the Fox News station in Phoenix, Arizona, who spoke in anonymity, corroborated Angelo’s statements, telling the media outlet that while she worked there, she expressed to them that she held more liberal-leaning views on contentious topics such as guns and immigration. They noted that she also donated to President Barack Obama‘s campaign.
Part of Lake’s campaign has also been focused on criticizing the media she was once a part of.
She has fought against “fake news,” and called reporters “monsters.” She also once said at a rally “Let’s defund the press,” as a play on some Democrats’ calls to “Defund the police.”
Lake has been an outspoken supporter of Trump during her campaign. She has been known to further his claims of a “stolen” 2020 election, refusing to say if she planned on conceding if she loses to the Arizona Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs.
