Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd Announces Bid For GOP Presidential Nomination

Former Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) announced his bid for the 2024 presidential election on Thursday during an appearance on CBS Mornings.

Hurd, who spent six years in the House, is known as a moderate Republican and has often voiced criticism of former president Donald Trump. Trump is currently the leading Republican presidential candidate, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida).

In his announcement, Hurd appealed to common-sense approaches to improving the nation. He said that President Joe Biden cannot solve the country’s problems and that handing the nomination to Trump will only ensure that Biden be elected for a second term.

“This is a decision that my wife and I decided to do because we live in complicated times and we need common sense,” said Hurd. “There are a number of generational-defining challenges that we’re faced with in the United States of America.”

He listed off a number of problems that he believes should be at the top of the federal agenda, such as China’s attempts to surpass the United States as the global superpower, inflation, the growth of artificial intelligence and falling test scores among U.S. students.

Despite his appealing pitch, Hurd will most likely not emerge as the Republican nominee. He is not as recognizable as other candidates and has a generally low level of support for his campaign.

“Our neighbors are not our enemies. They’re our fellow Americans who we just happen to have a disagreement with,” said Hurd on Thursday, acknowledging the deeply partisan split in the country. “If we remember two things we can pull this off: America is better together, and way more unites us than divides us.”
