Former Attorney General Bill Barr disagrees with the GOP narrative that Donald Trump is a victim of the “witch hunt” that led to his indictment for mishandling classified documents.
On Thursday, the former president was charged with removing documents containing national security and nuclear secrets from the White House at the end of his term. After a lengthy investigation, Trump is now facing several decades of prison time for taking the documents, lying to the FBI and obstructing justice.
Barr, who was appointed by Trump and served under him throughout his presidency, has been public about his opinions regarding the documents case. He believes that the investigation was warranted and that Trump made the situation worse for himself by continuing to conceal the documents.
“Yes, he’s been a victim in the past,” said Barr on Sunday on Fox News. “Yes, his adversaries have obsessively pursued him with phony claims, and I’ve been defending against them when he is a victim. But this is much different. He’s not a victim here.”

His comments were in response to a statement made by Trump, who remains defiant and claims he is innocent.
“They’ve launched one witch hunt after another to try and stop our movement, to thwart the will of the American people,” Trump said on Saturday.
Trump is rallying the Republican party around his cause, pushing the narrative that he is being unfairly charged in a case that is politically motivated.
Barr is in full support of the investigation into and subsequent charges brought against Trump, arguing that the former president did not act appropriately and that his attempt to lie about his crimes has made his situation worse.
“This particular episode of trying to retrieve those documents, the government acted responsibly,” said Barr. “And it was Donald J. Trump who acted irresponsibly…. If half of what is in the indictment is true, he’s toast!”
