Former President Donald Trump has started his search for a potential vice presidential running mate for 2024 in the event that he decides to run again. Although no formal vetting process is in place, it is clear that former Vice President Mike Pence will not be considered for the position.
Pence, who slavishly praised the former president throughout his term, had a particularly difficult ending to Trump’s presidency because of his role in certifying the election which happened on the same day as the Capitol insurrection. Pence later condemned the attack on the Capitol, during which many rioters chanted “hang Mike Pence.” Still, Pence is also considering running for president in 2024 – even if Trump runs.
Other candidates who are unlikely to be picked include Chris Christie and Nikki Haley. In a Vanity Fair story, Trump said Christie was “very disloyal.” When talking about Haley, Trump said, “She has been killed by the party. When they speak badly about me, the party is not happy about it. It’s pretty amazing. There’s not been anything like this.”
Trump has been focusing much of this political air-time on supporting Republican candidates for the 2022 midterms and airing grievances with perceived enemies – inside and outside of the party.
