Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado), a far-right gun rights activist, faced backlash from Democrats after she posted prayers for the victims of a mass shooting at an LGBTQ bar in Colorado Springs.
Boebert tweeted on Sunday, the day after the shooting, that the victims and their families were in their players and wrote that “this lawless violence needs to end and end quickly.”
Many Democrats slammed Boebert for her remarks, pointing out the contradiction between her comments and her anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. She has falsely tweeted before that members of the LGBTQ community are “grooming” children.
“You don’t get to ‘thoughts and prayers’ your way out of this,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) wrote, also highlighting the fact that Boebert has defended wide access to guns. “You have played a major role in elevating anti-LGBT+ hate rhetoric and anti-trans lies while spending your time in Congress blocking even the most common sense gun safety laws.”

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-California) also slammed Boebert.
“We don’t need your prayers. Do some soul-searching instead,” he tweeted.
Boebert was narrowly reelected to represent Colorado’s 3rd district, which does not include Colorado Springs, where a shooter killed five people and injured 25 at Club Q, a gay nightclub.
In an interview, Boebert denied her previous remarks are related to the mass shooting and hatred against the LGBTQ community.
“That is completely false. I have never had bad rhetoric towards anyone and their personal preference as an adult,” she told KOA’s Ross Kaminsky, before proceeding to reinforce her past. “What I’ve criticized is the sexualization of our children. And I’ve criticized men dressing up as caricatures of women.”
