In the Maryland gubernatorial primary, far-right candidate Dan Cox won the GOP nomination against his establishment competitor, Kelley Schultz.
Schultz was campaigning as a moderate against Cox, who is backed by former President Donald Trump. Cox has also been outspoken about his election denialism and continues to preach the idea that the election was stolen to energize his voters.
Trump-critic Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) supported Schultz in the race.
During the height of the pandemic, Cox has been highly critical of Hogan’s handling of stay-at-home orders. At one point during the clash, Cox attempted to impeach Hogan for his restrictive policies.

Cox has also been persistent in his rhetoric that President Joe Biden is not the elected president. In some speeches, he called Mike Pence a traitor for his defiance of Trump.
