Facebook stated on Friday that former President Donald Trump‘s ban from the social media platform would last at least two more years, meaning that he will not be able to use his social network during the 2022 midterm elections. The company also said it would end a policy of handling posts from politicians differently from other users.
“Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols,” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, wrote in a statement.
Clegg has also revealed that even if Trump’s ban is lifted, there will be strict rules to monitor him.
“When the suspension is eventually lifted, there will be a strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions that will be triggered if Mr. Trump commits further violations in future, up to and including permanent removal of his pages and accounts,” Chegg added.
