Ex-Rep. Liz Cheney Calls Trump ‘Cruel & Vindictive’ After GOP Panel Calls For Her To Be Investigated By FBI

A report released by House Republicans suggested that former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) should be investigated for probing the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack.

In January, President-elect Donald Trump accused Cheney of deleting or destroying evidence from the Jan. 6 committee, which he claimed kept his lawyers from properly preparing for his defense.

Two months later, Trump demanded that she and the rest of the January 6 Committee be jailed for “withholding information” about their investigation into his actions during the Capitol riot.

The findings issued in the 128-page interim report show House Republicans working to reinforce Trump’s desire to punish his political enemies, including Cheney and members of the committee who he said should be imprisoned.

“Until we hold accountable those responsible, and reform our institutions, we will not fully regain trust,” House Administration Committee Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-Georgia) wrote in the report.

“Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the Jan. 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Loudermilk’s panel wrote in the report’s conclusion.

This report singles out the former Wyoming congresswoman for prosecution for her role in working alongside one of the star witnesses against Trump, his former senior aide, Cassidy Hutchinson, who offered details about his actions on January 6, 2021, during a 2022 hearing.

“Evidence uncovered by the Subcommittee revealed that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge,” the report declared.

“This secret communication with a witness is improper and likely violates 18 U.S.C. 1512,” it added. “Such action is outside the due functioning of the legislative process and therefore not protected by the Speech and Debate clause.”

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation must also investigate Representative Cheney for violating 18 U.S.C. 1622, which prohibits any person from procuring another person to commit perjury,” the panel said. “Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, Hutchinson committed perjury when she lied under oath to the Select Committee.”

“Additionally, Hutchinson was interviewed by the FBI as part of its investigation into President Trump,” they noted. “This Subcommittee sought a copy of the FBI report 302, documenting this interview and Hutchinson’s statements, but the FBI has refused to produce this vital document.”

“The FBI must immediately review the testimony given by Hutchinson in this interview to determine if she also lied in her FBI interview, and, if so, the role former Representative Cheney played in instigating Hutchinson to radically change her testimony,” the panel recommended.

Cheney posted a statement on her Bluesky social media page responding to this report.

“January 6th showed Donald Trump for who is really is – a cruel and vindictive man who allowed violent attacks to continue against our Capitol and law enforcement officers while he watched television and refused for hours to instruct his supporters to stand down and leave,” she said in the statement.

“The January 6th Committee’s hearings and report featured scores of Republican witnesses, including many of the most senior officials from Trump’s own White House, campaign and Administration,” she said. “All of this testimony was painstakingly set out in thousands of pages of transcripts, made public along with a highly detailed and meticulously sourced 800-page report.”

“The Department of Justice conducted its own independent investigation and reached the same fundamental conclusions,” she then declared.

“Now, Chairman Loudermilk’s ‘Interim Report’ intentionally disregards the truth and the Select Committee’s tremendous weight of evidence, and instead fabricates lies and defamatory allegations in an attempt to cover up what Donald Trump did,” she asserted. “Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence, and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth.”

“No reputable lawyer, legislator or judge would take this seriously,” Cheney claimed.
