Dutch lawyer Alexander van der Zwaan was just sentenced to 30 days in prison, making him the first person in the Donald Trump-Russia probe to face sentencing for lying to investigators.
Van der Zwaan was convicted for lying about his contacts with Rick Gates, a former Trump aide who was accused of transferring millions of dollars from offshore accounts and lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation officers about the matter.
Van der Zwaan’s indictment did not involve the 2016 Presidential election, and there have been no findings indicating that Trump engaged in any wrongdoing during the election either. Trump maintains his innocence and has repeatedly said there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia in 2016.
Van der Zwaan’s former international law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, worked with Paul Manafort and Gates when they were both political consultants in Ukraine. Van der Zwaan was fired from the firm last year.
