President Donald Trump and PM Theresa May at Joint Press Conference
Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May told the BBC in an interview that President Donald Trump advised her to sue the European Union over Britain’s withdrawal from the Union.
Asked by the visibly surprised interviewer to repeat her account of Trump’s advice, May said, “Sue the E.U.” She continued smiling, “not go into negotiation, sue them.”
But May dismissed Trump’s suggestion and said, “Actually no, we’re going into negotiations with them. But interestingly, what the President also said at that press conference was, ‘Don’t walk away — don’t walk away from negotiations, because then you’re stuck.'”
When asked by the interviewer if May could trust anything Trump said, she replied, “I sit down with the President of the United States of America and we come to agreements and put them in place . . . That is part of our very special relationship,” May said and added, “the highest degree of special.”

May’s comments are references to Trump’s description of the U.S.-U.K. relationship in an interview with the Sun. Trump also suggested in the interview that Boris Johnson, May’s Conservative Party rival, would make a “great prime minister.”
After the meeting with May, Trump told reporters at a joint press conference that he didn’t criticize the Prime Minister and called the Sun story “fake news.” “I did give her a suggestion, I wouldn’t say advice, and I think she found it maybe too brutal,” he said.
