Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) told an interviewer that he does not think President Donald Trump should come to El Paso after the mass shooting on Saturday that O’Rourke says Trump is directly responsible for.
Trump responded via Twitter personally attacking the former Texas representative. Calling O’Rourke’s first name a “phony name to indicate Hispanic heritage,” ending the tweet with “be quiet!”

O’Rourke responded by tweeting back at the president. “22 people in my hometown are dead after an act of terror inspired by your racism. El Paso will not be quiet and neither will I,” he wrote.
Trump’s initial tweet came after the 2020 candidate tweeted that when Trump comes to El Paso, “I will be joining our strong, beautiful, binational community at #ElPasoStrong.”
O’Rourke has gained some traction in the media for his comments on Trump after the El Paso shooting that left 22 dead. O’Rourke told reporters, “You know the shit he’s been saying. He’s been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. I don’t know, like, members of the press, what the f—?” He has furthered compared Trump to a leader in Nazi Germany.
Although Trump condemned racism and white nationalism, he has done little to dispute the arguments made by many Democrats that his anti-immigrant rhetoric is the reason behind the El Paso shooting.
O’Rourke said, “you only have an attack like this when you have a president who gives people permission to act on this hatred and this racism.”
Trump is scheduled to visit Dayton and El Paso on Wednesday.
