Donald Trump Jr. has decided to forgo his secret service protection in order to have more privacy in his life.
Trump, who lives in New York, was joined with another top ranking White House official to give up her secret service rights. It is unclear whether Trump’s decision will apply to his wife and five children as well. In an unrelated move, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway will also no longer be covered by agents.
Overall, these moves will be beneficial to the Secret Service, which has been worn thin by the lifestyle of the Trump family. They have houses in multiple cities and states, and travel often. Watchdog groups and others have taken a special interest in how often the Trumps travel, with many arguing that taxpayer money should not have to support the Secret Service’s expenses to cover the entire family. Additionally, the agency has had to shift agents to covering the Trumps who would otherwise be working on criminal cases or investigations.
Donald Trump‘s other children and grandchildren will continue to be protected by the agency. “To ensure the safety and security of our protectees and their families, we will not confirm who is currently receiving Secret Service protection,” says spokeswoman Catherine Milhoan told The New York Times, who would not comment further.

These changes come during one of the secret service’s most challenging periods of the year – the United Nations General Assembly. Heads of state and high-ranking officials will be located in Manhattan near the U.N. building and the secret service is required to protect them. More than 1,000 special agents have already surpassed their cap overtime pay hours, but a bill has been proposed to raise the cap.
