Donald Trump
In his latest attempt to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, President Donald Trump alleged that the investigation will “meddle” in the midterm elections to benefit Democrats.
Trump’s claim echoes what his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said earlier this month when he falsely claimed that Mueller’s office told him the investigation should be done by September – that dragging out the investigation could unfairly disadvantage Republicans in the midterm elections. He also invoked his favorite term for the investigation – “witch hunt” – multiple times in a series of angry tweets Tuesday.

The president consistently referred to the investigation team as “13 Angry Democrats,” alleged that the only collusion was done by Democrats and stated that Hillary Clinton, who does not currently hold any government positions, should be the one under investigation along with the FBI, the Justice Department, former President Barack Obama, former FBI Director James Comey, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and others.
Although Trump believes Mueller’s investigation is “rigged” to benefit Democrats, both Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller as special counsel, are registered Republicans. In an interview with CNN, Giuliani called the Russia probe “illegitimate” and said the strategy to discredit the investigation is an attempt to sway the public to Trump’s side should he face impeachment.
“They are giving us material to do it,” Giuliani said. “Of course, we have to do it in defending the president. We are defending, to a large extent… we are defending here. It is for public opinion, because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach, not impeach.”
Last week, Trump claimed the Obama administration planted a “spy” in his campaign and demanded the Justice Department investigate this.
