Dominion Sues Fox News For $1.6 Billion Over False Election Fraud Claims

Dominion Voting Systems has filed a lawsuit against Fox News for reporting several false accusations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election against the company. Dominion seeks $1.6 billion in damages from the network.

Lawyers representing Dominion wrote in their lawsuit that Fox aired “baseless conspiracy theories” that Dominion helped rig the 2020 presidential election in favor of then-President-elect Joe Biden. Dominion’s suit says Fox News “sold a false story of election fraud in order to serve its own commercial purposes, severely injuring Dominion in the process.”

One of several claims from Fox News during the election was that Dominion voting machines were manufactured by deceased Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, a claim backed by former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, who has also been sued by Dominion in excess of $1 billion. Dominion says that by airing unverified, false conspiracy theories parallel with election coverage, the conspiracy theories were used to justify “why President Trump lost in so many states.”

A Fox News spokesperson released a statement on behalf of the network soon after Dominion’s suit saying they are “proud of our 2020 election coverage, which stands in the highest tradition of American journalism, and will vigorously defend against this baseless lawsuit in court.”

Dominion has already filed similar suit against Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Trump ally Mike Lindell for similar claims. A separate voting company, Smartmatic, has already sued Fox News for $2.7 billion over election fraud claims in February.
