Despite Scandals, Rep. George Santos Planning To Run For Re-Election In 2024
Since his campaign win in November, Rep. George Santos (R-New York) has been ensnared in a slew ofethics issues.
According to Fellow New York Rep. Ritchie Torres (D), the potential ethics violations are not holding the first-year Representative from planning his reelection.
“Breaking News: George Santos is telling advisors that he wishes to serve a 2nd term, despite previously promising that he wouldn’t run for reelection,” Torres wrote on Twitter.
The tweet also includes an article published by CNN, reporting that sources close to Santos have been told he will seek re-election.
Santos has been facing allegations that he consistently lied to constituents while on the campaign. Santos said he attended colleges he never went to, worked at companies he had never worked for and lied about his family’s background.
“Let me be very clear, I’m not leaving, I’m not hiding and I am NOT backing down,” Santos tweeted on Tuesday. “I will continue to work for #NY03 and no amount of Twitter trolling will stop me. I’m looking forward to getting what needs to be done, DONE!”
On Long Island, Concerned Citizens of NY-03 marched in front of the embattled representative’s office with signs reading, “George Santos lied to us.”
“We wanted to make sure that he knew that we were not going away,” Jody Kass, the Concerned Citizens of NY-03, told CBS. “We wanted to make sure there was no normalization of this imposter being a congressman.”
Santos, who has maintained his innocence, stepped down from his assigned committees earlier this month while ethics investigations are conducted.
“It is important that I primarily focus on serving the constituents of New York’s Third Congressional District and providing federal-level representation without distraction,” Santos said.
