DeSantis Considers Evacuating Residents of Collapsed Miami Condo’s ‘Sister Building’

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida) said Saturday that the state’s officials are considering relocating residents in the “sister building” of the Surfside, Florida, condo that collapsed earlier this week out of an abundance of caution.

Residents have stayed inside Champlain Towers North even after the Champlain Towers South collapsed on Thursday. So far, four people have reportedly died from the incident, while 159 remain unaccounted for as of Saturday.

DeSantis was in a press briefing Saturday morning when he told reporters that he is discussing with the local officials a plan to move residents of the north tower out.

“It was built at the same time with the same designer, so they are looking at working with them, and I know they are considering potentially evacuating them, but that’s something that ultimately the mayor is going to have to make the call on,” DeSantis said. “I don’t know if there’s indications that there’s any problems with that building, but just given the similarities, given the same age, they think that that may be something.”
