WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 24: U.S. President Joe Biden concludes his address to the nation from the Oval Office of the White House on July 24, 2024 in Washington, DC. The president addressed reasons for abruptly ending his run for a second term after initially rejecting calls from some top Democrats to do so, and outlined what he hopes to accomplish in his remaining months in office. Only two Democrats attended a congressional hearing about former President Joe Biden’s alleged mental decline while in the White House.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Peter Welch (D-Vermont) were the only Democrats who showed up for the kickoff Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Wednesday morning. Both of them left shortly after it began, questioning the committee for their decision to investigate an already retired Biden.
“So far this year, the Republican majority on this committee has not held a single oversight hearing despite numerous critical challenges facing the nation that are under our jurisdiction,” Durbin said.
He’s referring to the committee’s unequal attention to conspiracies about Biden’s mental capabilities during his presidency, yet their inattentiveness towards violent actions made against other Democratic leaders.

He mentioned the murder of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and the unwarranted apprehension of Sen. Alex Padilla (D-California), a member of the Judiciary Committee, as examples from the previous week alone.
“Apparently, armchair diagnosing former President Biden is more important than the issues of grave concern, which I have mentioned,” Durbin said.
The meeting continued after the Democrats left with conspiracy theories about Democrat leaders “covering up” Biden’s cognitive decline playing a central role.
Three witnesses, none of whom worked under the Biden Administration, were brought to testify.
Footage from the disastrous presidential debate between Biden and Trump in June 2024 was provided as proof.
“Today’s hearing is about competency, corruption and cover-up within the Biden Administration,” 91-year-old Judiciary Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley said. “Simply put, the last administration was rudderless from one crisis to another. The Biden Administration failed and folded. The partisan media did their best to cover up those failures.”
Although Biden has largely left public view, his physician was ordered to testify in the hearing on June 27.
