“Democracy Won,” Nancy Pelosi Says On Jan. 6 Anniversary

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) led the moment of silence for the one-year anniversary of the attack on the Capitol.

She began the speech by acknowledging and thanking law enforcement for their role in keeping people safe and allowing a peaceful transition of power to be possible.

“That day and the days after, they were the defenders of our democracy. And their courage and patriotism remain an inspiration,” Pelosi said.

Yesterday, she said that she wanted to explain what will be written about in American history books.

“Democracy won,” she said.

Pelosi doesn’t blame the Capitol rioters, rather she believes that the fault for what happened should rest on former President Donald Trump.

“They may have thought that was right,” she said. ”But they were lied to by the president of the United States… For that, he should be ashamed.”

Pelosi went on to praise the congressional staff who were able to protect the certified electoral votes from the mob.

“Today, we accept responsibility as daunting and demanding as any previous generations of leadership have faced,” Pelosi said in a speech before leading the moment of silence. “As we reflect on that darkest day, we remember that the insurrection sought not only to attack the building but to undermine democracy itself.”
