Former Sen. David Perdue (R) has filed paperwork in Georgia indicating he will run against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) in the upcoming 2022 Georgia Senate race.
Perdue, a one-term senator, lost his seat to Sen. John Ossoff in January in the same cycle that elected Warnock. While Ossoff will serve for the next six years, Warnock was elected in a special election after former Sen. Johnny Isakson (R) vacated his seat early. Warnock will serve the remainder of Isakson’s term and run for reelection next year.
Purdue’s 2020 Senate race left him with 49.4% of the vote in January, making him the Republican front runner. Former President Donald Trump, who campaigned with Perdue, has already indicated he plans to campaign again in 2022, now likely for Perdue again.
2022 will also see the Georgia gubernatorial election which Trump appears even more excited to campaign in. Trump has spoken out repeatedly about Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger after they refused to contest the 2020 presidential election results in their state.
