Georgia gubernatorial Republican candidate David Perdue lashed out at Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams over her Saturday statement that Georgia is the worst state in the country to live in, saying that she is “demeaning her own race.”
After making a statement she knew would be controversial, Abrams made an effort to explain what she meant. She referred to Georgia’s low rankings for mental health access, its high level of maternal mortality, decreasing wages and increasing incarceration.
“We are not the No. 1 place to live in the United States … but we can get there. You see, Georgia is capable of greatness. We just need greatness to be in our governor’s office,” she concluded.
Perdue spoke to a crowd on Monday, heavily criticizing Abrams.

“Did y’all see what Stacey said this weekend?” Perdue asked. “Said Georgia’s the worst place in the country to live. Hey, she ain’t from here. Let her go back where she came from. She doesn’t like it here.”
Abrams was born in Wisconsin and raised in Mississippi before moving to Georgia in high school.
Perdue then referenced Abrams’ comments from the 2018 gubernatorial election, which she lost to sitting Gov. Brian Kemp (R), where she had advocated for creating more jobs in the state.
“People shouldn’t have to go into agriculture or hospitality in Georgia to make a living in Georgia,” she said at the time.
“You know, I don’t think a lot of people in Georgia understood that when she told black farmers, ‘You don’t need to be on the farm,’ and she told black workers in hospitality and all this, ‘You don’t need to be,’ she is demeaning her own race when it comes to that,” Perdue said in his controversial comments. “I am really over this. She should never be considered for material for a governor of any state, much less our state where she hates to live.”
