Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases and member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, estimates that the COVID-19 pandemic could kill 100,000 to 200,000 Americans.
Fauci said at a White House briefing that based on the current pace of the virus’s spread in the United States, “between 100,000 and 200,000” people may die from the coronavirus. According to Johns Hopkins University, as of Sunday there were 125,000 cases in the U.S. and about 2,200 deaths.
Experts say that with more test results, undocumented chains of transmission will increase the number of new coronavirus cases in the U.S. Fauci added that although he expects millions of Americans to become infected, “I just don’t think that we really need to make a projection when it’s such a moving target, that you could so easily be wrong.”
