Chinese Officials ‘Not Aware’ Of Phone Calls Trump Claims He Had With Them

On Monday, President Donald Trump told reporters that Chinese officials had called him to resume trade talks. China’s Foreign Ministry now says they were “not aware” of any calls.

A spokesman for the ministry said, “I am not aware of the phone calls over the weekend” and then again said that he had not heard about any calls.

He also added that Trump’s trade war was “stark trade bullying.”

Trump told reporters at the G7 summit last weekend that “China called last night our top trade people and said, ‘Let’s get back to the table,’ so we will be getting back to the table, and I think they want to do something.”

The president added that he had two calls with China and that “they mean business.”

During a CNBC interview, Trump did not want to discuss the nature of his “numerous calls,” but he referred to comments made by China’s Vice Premier Liu He about reaching a deal.

At a business conference Monday, he had said, “We are willing to resolve the issue through consultations and cooperation in a calm attitude and resolutely oppose the escalation of the trade war.” Adding “the escalation of the trade war is not beneficial for China, the United States, nor to the interests of the people of the world.”
