Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Dismisses Twitter Rumors Of Her Resignation

After rumors of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot‘s resignation trended on Twitter Saturday night, Lightfoot responded on Sunday morning, confirming she has no plans to leave office anytime soon.

“I will continue to lead a group of the willing all across our city who are about doing the people’s work,” the Chicago mayor tweeted from her personal account. “The people of Chicago elected me mayor, and I will continue to serve today, tomorrow and into the future. Back to work.”

The rumors surrounding Lightfoot’s resignation stemmed from a tweet sent by Ja’Mal Green, an activist and former Chicago mayoral candidate who lost to Lightfoot.

“Lori Lightfoot is resigning tomorrow in a stunning end to her mayorship,” Green wrote in the now-deleted tweet on Saturday.

Almost instantly, Lightfoot’s name was trending, and there was speculation about uncorroborated allegations involving her personal life that may have led her to resign.

Lightfoot called these rumors “homophobic, racist and misogynistic” on Twitter and fought back.

“Our city doesn’t have any time for homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors today or any day. It’s shocking and disappointing to see some media members and verified Twitter handles are peddling this trash as truth,” she wrote.

Later on Sunday, Green apologized for his tweet, claiming it was “taken out of context,” and he “should have kept quiet.”

Green stated he tweeted because he was “made aware by members of the political world that it was possible that mayor Lightfoot would resign,” amplifying the rumor.

“Anyone who wants to work with me to make progress, I’m ready,” Lightfoot tweeted. “Even if we don’t always see eye to eye, if you actually love this city and want to be part of making it better, let’s do the work. The rest of you, get out of the way.”
