Cheney Says Justice Department Should Decide Whether To Charge Trump For Capitol Insurrection

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) said the Justice Department should be the ones to decide on whether or not to charge the former president with any crimes related to the January 6 Capitol attack.

“That’s a decision that the Justice Department is going to have to make,” Cheney said when speaking to reporters at the House Republican retreat on Monday.

Cheney was one of the 10 House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump in January, claiming at the time that he “summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.”

Three months later, Cheney stands by her statement. She also said it was “really important” for Congress to have a bipartisan commission to investigate and provide a full accounting of the riot.

“I think that what happened on January 6 is unprecedented in our history, and I think that it’s very important that the commission be able to focus on that,” Cheney said Monday.

“I am very concerned, as all my colleagues are, about the violence that we saw, the BLM, the Antifa violence last summer. I think that’s a different set of issues, a different set of problems, and a different set of solutions.”
