Riley Williams was charged last week with stealing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s laptop and trying to selling it to Russia. The tipster who informed on Williams to the FBI has now been revealed as Williams’ ex-boyfriend who the accused’s lawyer said “overstated” claims about his ex.
Before she turned herself into authorities, Williams left her home, changed her phone number and cancelled her social media accounts. Williams’ lawyer claimed this was done, at the earlier recommendation of local police, because Williams’ ex-boyfriend was abusive and stalking Williams. Williams’ lawyer further noted that the defendant has already filed a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend.
Williams has since been released on house arrest.
The judge presiding, Martin Carlson, during Williams’ bail hearing Thursday allowed her to be released to house arrest with GPS tracking under the supervision of her mother. Carlson noted as well that the same governmental structure Williams was protesting on January 6 is the one that allowed her due process. “The Constitution prevailed yet again,” Carlson said. “And the Constitution has, is and will be prevailing in your case.”
