Capitol Police Officers Sue Trump Over Jan. 6 Insurrection

Seven Capitol Police officers are suing former President Donald Trump for conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed the suit Thursday morning, claiming that Trump, alongside militias and other associates, violated the Ku Klux Klan Act and D.C. law during the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

The suit states: “Because of Defendants’ unlawful actions, Plaintiffs were violently assaulted, spat on, tear-gassed, bear-sprayed, subjected to racial slurs and epithets, and put in fear for their lives. Plaintiffs’ injuries, which Defendants caused, persist to this day.”

The seven officers involved in the suit released a joint statement on the matter. “We joined the Capitol Police to uphold the law and protect the Capitol community,” the officers said. “On Jan. 6 we tried to stop people from breaking the law and destroying our democracy. Since then our jobs and those of our colleagues have become infinitely more dangerous. We want to do what we can to make sure the people who did this are held accountable and that no one can do this again.”

This isn’t the first lawsuit Trump has been hit with since January.

Earlier this year, two Capitol Police officers filed a suit against him, accusing him of inciting an insurrection.

Additionally, several members of Congress, including Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), have sued Trump because of the events of Jan. 6.
