Calls For Impeachment Of Attorney General William Barr Mount For Role In Ukraine Scandal

White House critics are calling for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr, following the revelation Wednesday that the Justice Department declined to investigate President Donald Trump‘s phone call with the Ukrainian president in which he requested the leader to investigate his political opponent Joe Biden.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said that Barr had “gone rogue.”

“You never know where we’re going next,” Pelosi told CNN. “Now, I think we’re getting involved in the coverup of the coverup, and that may be something that will take some time to investigate.”

A White House transcript of the call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Biden, adding that Barr could his investigation.

“I am also going to have Attorney General Barr call and we will get to the bottom of it,” Trump told Zelensky. “I’m sure you will figure it out.”

According to a statement Wednesday from Department of Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec, the Criminal Division “reviewed the official record of the call and determined, based on the facts and applicable law, that there was no campaign finance violation and that no further action was warranted.”

Pelosi found it “curious” that Barr was name-dropped in the phone call and was also in charge of the investigation of the whistleblower complaint of the aforementioned conversation.

“Since [Barr] was mentioned in all of this, it’s curious that he would be making decisions about how the complaint would be handled,” said Pelosi.

The DOJ also allegedly advised the acting Director of National Intelligence to withhold a whistleblower complaint about Trump’s phone call with Ukraine from Congress.

Journalist Thor Benson quote an image of the transcript that highlighted Trump telling Zelensky to work with Barr on investigating Biden, and tweeted “Impeach Barr, too.”

House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler (D-New York) tweeted that Barr should at least recuse himself from the investigation.

“The President dragged the Attorney General into this mess,” Nadler wrote. “At a minimum, AG Barr must recuse himself until we get to the bottom of this matter.”
