Former President George W. Bush told House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-South Carolina) that he was the nation’s “savior” for helping get Joe Biden elected.
Clyburn is largely credited with helping Biden win the Democratic Party nomination. He is South Carolina’s only Democratic representative in Congress, the dean of the state’s Democrats and the third-ranking member of the U.S. House.
Biden won Southern Carolina by nearly 30 points, claiming victory over his Democratic competitors and making one of the biggest political comebacks in presidential campaign history.
According to Clyburn, Bush told him, “you know, you’re the savior, because if you had not nominated Joe Biden, we would not be having this transfer of power today.” Bush also added that he believed Biden was the only Democratic candidate who had the ability to defeat former President Donald Trump.

Freddy Ford, spokesperson for Bush, downplayed Clyburn’s remarks, tweeting that the former president was “saying Clyburn helped save Biden’s nomination… nothing Biblical here.”
In a statement issued following Biden’s victory, Bush wrote, “Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man. I offered him the same thing I offered Presidents Trump and Obama: my prayers for his success, and my pledge to help in any way I can.”
