WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 05: U.S. President Donald Trump shushes journalists before signing the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act in the Rose Garden at the White House June 05, 2020 in Washington, DC. In the midst of nationwide protests against the death of George Floyd, the U.S. Labor Department announced the unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent in May, a surprising improvement in the nation’s job market as hiring rebounded faster than economists expected in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. After White House call logs obtained by the House select committee probing the January 6 Capitol attack showed a seven-hour gap in then-President Donald Trump‘s phone records from that day, speculation began rising that Trump used a private cell phone or covert form of communication to avoid having his calls scrutinized.
Trump claimed on Monday that he did not know what a “burner phone” was, “I have no idea what a burner phone is, to the best of my knowledge I have never even heard the term.”
John Bolton, who was Trump’s national security adviser, is disputing the statement. Bolton said that he heard the former President use the term “burner phone” multiple times and that they had multiple conversations about the benefits of using one.
The 11-pages of call logs show seven hours and 37 minutes of missing calls between 11:17 a.m. ET and 6:54 p.m., which includes the time the Capitol was breached in efforts to stop then-Vice President Mike Pence from certifying President Joe Biden‘s win just after 2 p.m. The missing hours of records also cover two previously reported calls to Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California).
