In a hypothetical rematch between Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, 49% of participants said that they would support Biden, and 44% said that they would support Trump, a new Quinnipiac University survey found.
As the Republican presidential frontrunner, Trump is pulling 29 points ahead of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, with 54% of voters supporting Trump and 25% supporting DeSantis. All other GOP candidates are polling under 5%.
Trump’s probable nomination as the Republican presidential candidate is surprising, as the former president is currently facing a slew of criminal allegations and has done very little campaigning.
In June, Trump was indicted on 37 counts for willful retention of national security information and conspiracy to obstruct justice. On Sunday night, he was sent a target letter informing him that he is a suspect in the investigation into the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. Lawsuits against Trump for hush-money payments to adult film star Stormi Daniels, and for defamation of columnist E. Jean Carroll, are still ongoing.

Despite substantial evidence that Trump has engaged in criminal activity, M.A.G.A. Republicans remain uninterested in an alternative GOP candidate. The narrow 5% difference between him and Biden indicates just how polarized the country really is, as almost half of Americans would rather vote for an alleged felon than for Biden.
Political experts have compared Trump’s loyal base to that of a cult. The former president has claimed that he will not even participate in the first Republican primary debate, as he does not feel that he needs the recognition or the boost in polls.
The Quinnipiac University survey also found Biden significantly leading his party, with 71% of voters supporting the president followed by 14% of voters supporting moderate Democrat Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
