Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has selected Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California) as his running mate for the 2020 election. Harris, the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother, becomes the first black female and first Asian of either gender to run on a national major-party ticket.

Harris was a fierce critic of Biden during the presidential primary debates but endorsed him after his win in the South Carolina primary. She has become a prolific fundraiser for the former vice president since then.

Before being elected senator in 2016, Harris was the attorney general of California, the first woman to serve in that role.
