Biden Nominates Cindy McCain, Widow Of Sen. John McCain, For Ambassador To U.N.’s Food Program

President Joe Biden announced four ambassadorial nominees for the United Nations Agencies For Food and Agriculture Program on Wednesday. The most high-profile nominee was Cindy McCain, the widow of the late Senator John McCain, as U.S. representative to the program.

John McCain, a respected former Republican senator who passed away in 2018, was Biden’s old friend.

The nomination could be interpreted as a bipartisan move by the president, though Cindy McCain endorsed Biden during his presidential campaign in 2020.

“My husband and Vice President Biden enjoyed a 30+ year friendship dating back to before their years serving together in the Senate,” she tweeted prior to the Democratic National Convention last year. “So I was honored to accept the invitation from the Biden campaign to participate in a video celebrating their relationship.”
