Biden Makes Play For North Carolina, Only Swing State He Lost In 2020

President Joe Biden (D) is gunning to win North Carolina, the only swing state he lost in 2020, over former President Donald Trump.

With less than five months until the election, both candidates have done significant campaigning in key swing states, which include North Carolina. Biden is currently putting additional efforts into trying to make North Carolina swing blue.

Biden has campaigned in North Carolina, where he spoke of infrastructure bills and low unemployment that were benefitting North Carolina. He has also planned a campaign event in Raleigh following the presidential debate on June 27, as well as launch micro-targeted advertising that focuses on the economy, reproductive rights and Trump’s impact on democracy. Additionally, Biden has 40 staffers and 11 offices across the state.

North Carolina has voted Republican in the past ten out of 11 elections, with former President Barrack Obama narrowly winning the state in 2008. The state frequently has Democratic governors, with the past seven of eight recent ones being a Democrat.

In 2020, Trump won the state by only 1.3%, his narrowest state win. North Carolina has become Biden’s sixth most targeted state, according to Andrew Arenge of the University of Pennsylvania Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies. The first five are Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia.

The state’s GOP candidate for governor, Mark Robinson, is also a controversial figure who has supported a total abortion ban and called members of the LGBTQ community “filth.”

An East Carolina University Center for Survey Research published a poll that showed that of 1,322 votes, Trump would likely win the state with 48% of the vote while Biden garnered 43%.

A poll published in April showed that more than half of those who voted for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the primary would vote for Biden in the election.
