Last week, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris teamed up for a campaign event in Philadelphia to court black voters for the first time this year. It won’t be the last time, though, as the campaign aims to animate black voters who have been drifting away from the president.
Biden and Harris took the stage, greeted by chants calling for “four more years.” During their speeches, the pair credited their 2020 presidential victory to the black voters. Biden explained that black voters have historically put “enormous faith in me” and “I’ve tried to do my best to honor that trust.”
Harris herself stated, “We beat Donald Trump once, and we’re going to do it again.”
Both individuals advertised their administration’s successes, highlighting the bipartisan infrastructure bill, the cancellation of student loan debt, the passage of legislation addressing gun violence, the appointment of black judges to various courts and the lowering of health care costs.

Biden and Harris both bashed Trump for his actions as president. They noted the former president’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, his appointment of Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, tax cuts for the rich and questioning of former President Barack Obama’s citizenship.
Recent polls have shown that black voter support for Biden has decreased from previous years, and his approval ratings are among some of the lowest recorded for a first-term president. Though Trump currently faces 34 felony charges in his hush-money trial, he has managed to garner an increase in black voter support.
While black voters have historically overwhelmingly supported the Democratic candidate, Biden has struggled to rally them. Though the president’s support from older and white voters remains strong, key states remain a battleground between Biden and Trump. Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin are crucial to Biden’s reelection, and he narrowly trails Trump in all three states.
